The Creation Story

The Creation Story

Upper Scene (Genesis 1 & 2)—God’s power emanates in a fullness of light from the central round and divides into lancets that shine through storm clouds and refract into the rainbow of God’s promise. Cedars of Lebanon dot the valley of a volcano. A creature dives into the deep and birds skim the treetops. In the garden is a Tree of Knowledge, a serpent hanging from its lower branch. Man and Woman mingle with pairs of animals.

The power of God emanates in a fullness of light from the central round. The light divides into lancets, with day to the right and night to the left. Planets, moon and stars illuminate the night sky. The sun shines through the clouds and storms, bringing rain to earth, and refracting into the rainbow of God’s promise. Dry land appears: here is a snow-capped mountain. Cedars of Lebanon dot the valley of an active volcano. The rains gather into rivulets on the mountainside and flow to the sea. A creature dives into the deep: “And God created great whales.” A flock of birds skims the treetops and distant poplars rise on the right. In the Garden is a heavily fruited Tree of Knowledge, a serpent hanging from its lower branch. Pairs of animals mingle with the human pair: giraffes, deer, rabbits. “Male and female created he them.” Two Red Admiral butterflies hover among the foxgloves, a pair of grouse feed and squirrels clamber to hide a nut. Bluebells, ferns, and mushrooms border the river. Rabbits and short-tailed weasels come to drink where the mallards play, and a swallow skims the water’s surface near the frog and water lilies.

Lower Scene—Life teems at the river’s edge with otters and waterfowl while a spider minds its web. Among the sea wrack and Irish moss cluster winkles and mussels. A Conger eel slithers through the kelp and the deep ocean rat-tail fish moves over a sea floor strewn with shellfish.

Life teems at the water’s edge: otters slip into the shallows; a duck dives to feed; a seagull flies with a captured minnow; a kingfisher watches a passing school of minnows; and a spider minds his web. Among the sea wrack and Irish moss cluster winkles and mussels. A Conger eel slithers through the kelp. The deep ocean rat-tail fish moves over a sea floor strewn with starfish, oysters, clams, scallops, and lobsters.
