I gasped.

There are moments which exist only in an inner photo album, and this was one of them. It was very early on Sunday morning as my bus sped down the Hudson Valley. I awoke from a semi-doze with a start.

We were passing a small field that in the dawning light was somehow entirely greenish-gold. I have never before seen such a color. And in the center of the field a young deer grazed, oblivious of the incredible color around him.

As I attempted to describe it later to a friend she said, "You mean something like butter melting over fresh peas?" That was almost it, vegetable metaphors had displayed it for the grasping. It was so alive and so not of this earth at the same time. It will never be repeated, as I have learned.

One cannot capture the beauty of nature twice. I remember trying to at a retreat years ago, by the seashore. I had gotten up very early and gone down to the still dark beach. As I sat huddled in my sweater on a piece of driftwood, dawn came.

For the only time in my life, the words of G. M. Hopkins came true, "Morning at the brown brink eastward springs..." The sky was both half brown and half a radiant apricot. The latter pushed the bronze aside. I was so captivated that I set my alarm for the same early hour the next day, and went back to the beach. There was no rerun. God doesn't do that, I finally realized.

But I have stored that sunrise in my memory, and now I have added the incredible green-gold of this morning's early light. They are MY photos and I cannot show them to anyone else.

Only God and I have seen them.
