Did You Forget?

There is only one time in the gospels when I would use the word "wistful" to describe an emotion in Jesus. There were times when he is encouraging, when he challenges a seeker, when he grows angry at the apparent blindness of those around him, but wistful? Yes.
It is this emotion that brings me to my Thanksgiving thought. Remember the day when he is approached by a group of lepers, 10 of them to be exact, poor outcasts of society who must have banded together in their misery. They keep their distance and ask only, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!"
They expect him to know what they want. His response is that they should show themselves to the priest, and get their certificates of restored health. On the way, they realize they have been healed.
One of them goes back to thank Jesus. The other nine do not, and Jesus wonders aloud, "Were not ten made clean? Where are the other nine?" His tone deepens as it becomes apparent that this returnee is a Samaritan, a man who is an outsider in every way.
We might say that the nine are exuberantly in search of their re-admission to society, that their joy blotted out the memory of the one responsible for it, that... But these are excuses, not reasons.
The fact remains that Jesus would have liked a thank you from them too. The grateful Samaritan is sent off with praise for his faith even as Jesus continues to look up the road for the others.
Let us not be among them this week. |

I did not forget to say "thank You" for the time and energy spent with me and our class of 1976. We missed you at our 35th reunion. You were in Rome. It has been a long time, but life is not about that, is it? Thinking of you, Grace (repka)Remember?
