Early Friday morning I made a huge mistake. While opening a can of cat food, I positioned my hands improperly. I truly did not mean to… but I gave myself a nasty gash between my thumb and pointing finger on my left hand. I was pulling open the can with my dominant right hand. When I realized what I had done, I decided this was definitely not a good move. Nevertheless, I applied a ‘Bounty’ and pressure and continued to feed the cats, get dressed and drive myself into work. Once, here at work, I realized I was going for my third ‘Bounty’ and that quite possibly I might need to have ‘it looked after.’
I was very embarrassed but I took myself to St. Vincent’s ER; I had made a previous appointment to meet a congregant there having cataract surgery at 10:30am. Well, I must share with you that I believe I was a recipient of a NYC first! I was admitted, hand examined, tetanus shot administered, hand deadened and received six stitches and was discharged in 46 minutes! (I met the congregant at 10:30!) Not once did I receive a condescending remark about my silliness at how the accident happened in the first place. I was treated with kindness and compassion. I began thinking while she was still sewing that this must be like the kingdom of God. The true kingdom must be a place where we, with all our brokenness, are treated with dignity and respect.
My accident has caused me to reflect and remember. It has returned me to the writings of Paul who says (paraphrasing) that we all have gifts; we are all interrelated and dependent on one another. My left hand, the weakest of my appendages, is the balance for my dominate right hand. When my left hand hurt, my whole body went into grief and mourning – I kept trying to protect the injured member.
We are all in the one body of Christ, each with our own particular wounds, each with our special way of caring and protecting each other. We are not all leaders; some of us are the very necessary balance. We are all necessary individuals in community. |
