The Art of Living

It was a conversation that embossed itself on my mind. The memory of it served as a teacher and challenge to me, and in recent times its message has increased in volume.
I had been complaining to the late Dr. Donald Smith, President of the Blanton-Peale Institute, about my predecessor Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and the busyness of his schedule. At the time, Dr. Peale was in his mid-seventies and was traveling worldwide at what seemed to me a torrid, reckless pace.
Don Smith quietly said, “I have been observing Norman for years, and he is the best-paced person I have ever known.” I was startled by that observation. It caused me to begin looking at Dr. Peale with new eyes, and I discovered that Don was correct.
Dr. Peale was living at a pace that was right for him. He allowed enough tension to keep alert and productive, and he managed enough space between commitments to maintain balance. The final proof of what Don observed is that Dr. Peale led a full and productive life well into his nineties.
Thus, there is the challenge of the right pace for you and for me. It’s all about the art of living. The Scriptures give us direction: “The Lord is my shepherd,” the Psalmist says. “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul.” And the prophet Isaiah states, “Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.”
Won’t you join me in seeking to discover what is your right pace, adjusting to it and staying with its wisdom?

Dear Dr. Calliandro,
I've been listening to you on WOR radio for many years and I miss hearing your inspiring, love & faith-filled sermons in the last few weeks. I hope you are feeling better, and recuperate fully & quickly. I enjoyed your message in "blog" form on the internet. All the very best, Ed in Merrick, NY
