The Easter Invitation, Large and Small
By webmaster @ 8:43 AM :: 137 Views :: 0 Comments :: Nina Frost

This blog appears on “Holy Saturday” that mysterious, sacred time between the gathering darkness of Good Friday, and the promise of new life and resurrection on Easter Sunday.

As transitional space, this Saturday has always spoken to me. It remains a bridge time, a day in-between days that are very clear about what is happening, what symbols we are invited to take in, what questions we might have on our hearts. This Saturday is a time to pause, a space before we enter the joy of Easter. At Marble, you are invited to an afternoon retreat from 12pm-5pm, called “Holy Waiting,” with communion at 5pm.

And sometimes the transition from doubt and darkness to joy and resurrection, (and what does that mean?) is not so easy, or so timely, or even possible, given our circumstances or inclinations.

So I want to offer up two of the myriad ways we can think of “resurrection,” without for a minute pretending to know what it means, or how it happened. The Bible asks us, over and over… how are these events stories in our own lives? These two ways to let resurrection in are in some ways opposites, in some ways the poles we cycle between each day, not just Easter.

The big invitation first: Episcopal priest Alan Jones, in his book “A Passion for Pilgrimage,” gets to the heart of the matter when he asks:

“How far are you prepared to wake up? How far are you available to the possibility? The truth is that the gospel promise of new life is available to us insofar as we are willing to enter our own passion story. The season of Lent and Easter is a time when God's Passion for us and our passion for God collide and make something new.”

So, in one hand, hold that question, however challenging: Where and how are you being asked to wake up to new life? What is the cost—and the promise—of stepping into it?

And in the other hand, hold the notion that sometimes resurrection comes quietly, subtly. Amidst all the Easter associations with "resurrection"--all the trumpets, tombs, lilies and sermons, all the expectation and rejoicing--I am reminded that the word means, in part, "again standing up." Very basic. Very daily, as our feet hit the floor each morning, and we emerge to face our individual work and lives. For many of us the ongoing call to again stand up is no small matter.

Easter blessings to you all, as you stand up, keep moving, and look for those places of new life.
