Well, here it is Sunday, 4:30pm. I am the only one on the 7th floor, I am having a delicious time sitting in the silence and thinking back over my week with God. Blessings, so many blessings. I was particularly blessed yesterday. Yesterday marked the culmination of months of planning, hoping and dreaming of a couple that were married at Marble.
He is a blend of Afro-American and Japanese parents. He was born in Yokohama, Japan; his father was in the military. Military life is hard –- it requires that you move every two to three years. It is hard to make and keep friends; it hurts when you leave. Children learn to adapt to different situations very quickly. His religious training was a blend of Buddhist and Baptist so he decided to be a Catholic! He went to Rutgers and then onto the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
She was born and raised here in NYC, in the Chelsea District. Her parents were white and self professed ‘hippies’. As a teenager, she sought a spiritual life by becoming a very religious Catholic, Opus Dei. She went to Northwestern and then onto Georgetown Law School. There could not be two people with more differing circumstances than these two. And yet … they have not only become good friends -- they have become life mates. This marriage, I believe, is a ‘God thing.’
They chose to be married at Marble for two reasons. First, the Catholic Church refused to grant him an annulment from the marriage he tried 15 years to make work. And secondly, they worshipped here at Marble and looked around to see Asian, Afro-American, Caribbean-American, Caucasian, Gays and Straights all sitting under one roof praising God. They loved that Marble is a place where diversity in race, gender, social and economic status is fully embraced and not just talked about.
These two people have boldly stepped out of the ‘accepted’ mainstream; they are courageously following their hearts. They have set their sights on God and love. Theirs will not be an easy road but we know from scripture, “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” [1 Cor. 8:1b] What are your eyes set on? What is the love that delights your heart? |

My fiancee and I have chosen to make Marble our spritual family. There are few institutions these days that celebrate and support marriage on a practical level. Attending service together, and hearing supportive words like yours, are the very reasons we chose Marble. Thank you.

Well. I have been really hesitant to post what my heart was telling me to, because I don't want these blogs to become political. But I must.
What speaks to my heart the most-what my heart is set upon, is one day being able to marry the man I love in front of the God I love in a church. With flowers, and candles, and rice, and the whole nine yards. That is my prayer, and I hope it happens in my lifetime.
