Your Weekend Assignment
By webmaster @ 12:01 AM :: 1101 Views :: 1 Comments

This weekend marks our last chance to savor the end of summer. It is estimated that 34.4 million Americans will drive somewhere during Labor Day Weekend. That number staggers the imagination! So much for those “staycations,” huh? Think of all the gasoline, rest stop breaks, fast food restaurants and, of course, those innocent but nagging questions from the back of the car, “Are we there yet?” AAA estimates that most families will spend roughly $700 for their travels this weekend. All in all, the next few days may prove to be a helpful boost for our sagging American economy.

New York City first observed Labor Day 118 years ago. On Tuesday, September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers, summoned by the Central Labor Union, a branch of the Noble Order of the Knights of Labor, took an unpaid holiday and marched in Union Square. Those parading vocalized their grievances and demanded justice. At that time, there was no such thing as an eight-hour day or minimum wage. Many federal workers were required to work twelve-hour days, including Sunday’s. And, before any changes took place, many would suffer both violence and death (i.e. the Haymarket affair of 1886).

Today, we are so blessed to be able to enjoy such weekends. Perhaps you will be one of the 34.4 million out on the road? Or, maybe you’re planning to enjoy outdoor recreation somewhere near your home? Some of us will spend quality time with our family and friends. All of these activities are important when resting from our labors.

Before the great plunge into another frantic season of labor, schoolwork and the pressure to be productive, I would encourage you to do the following this weekend:

(1) Take a moment to give thanks for the American workers. After all, if it wasn’t for them and President Grover Cleveland, this would be just another weekend.

(2) Give thanks to God for all the blessings you enjoy in this life; maybe even put pen to paper and make a list.

(3) For your own spiritual development, find a new activity here at Marble and plan to participate in it this fall. We have a lot of dynamic programs and service opportunities beginning this month. If you peruse our website, you will see a plethora of opportunities that await you: Small Groups, Bible Study, Women’s Ministry, Men’s Ministry, Stephen Ministry, Couple’s, 40/50’s, etc., etc. Take this weekend to prayerfully consider one of these upcoming ministries. I promise, you’ll be glad you did!

And now, enjoy the blessings of this weekend! May your spirit be enriched and your mind renewed.

I hope in a 100 or so years a young, talented minister will write about something where I was a participant. The Haymarket rioters probably had no idea what kind of impact they were having in Union Square. Likewise, we may not know the significance of our actions today on the world tomorrow.

Many of us work much more than 8 hours a day whether we’re at work or not. We have 24/7 access to our jobs or our jobs to us. Still, I’m glad to have work. Let’s also pray for those who are unemployed and under employed.
