I am working on my sermon on the power of hope. Here is what I have come up with so far... fairly random thoughts...
In early Christian symbolism hope is the anchor of the soul and the symbol is the anchor. It is what keeps us stable and firm in our faith.
Hope is opposed by despair in Aquinas both despair and presumption—presumption being the state of thinking you know the outcome of Reality, a prideful presumption. Despair is when we abandon all hope. Arthur says in one sermon that we can live without faith (not the best way to live) we can live even without love but we cannot live without hope.
Hope seems to be a necessary ingredient for living. Hope as the expectation of a better future or a better afterlife or even children better off than us. Some hope in a better something.
