Volunteering

With helping hands and loving hearts, Marble's ACTION Volunteers reach out to meet human needs in New York City.  Our volunteers stay through the night at shelters for the homeless, serve in hospitals and soup kitchens, and help the disabled enjoy cultural activities.  They also tutor the young, assist with children's outings and sports events and deliver hot meals to people with AIDS.

By participating in Marble's volunteer outreach, you can make a difference by:

SERVING REGULARLY...

The Homeless : Volunteers needed to help with life skill workshops or to greet homeless guests, distribute linens and stay through the night.  Monthly commitment preferred.

Hospital Services : Hospitals throughout the New York City area need volunteers to visit and assist geriatric patients, infants, and people with AIDS.  Scheduling is flexible, as hospitals operate around-the-clock, but regular commitment is expected.  Training given for some activities.

Preparing meals for the homelessMeal Delivery : A "meals-on-wheels" delivery of hot lunches to homes of individuals with AIDS.  Many pick-up points in Manhattan and other boroughs.  Can be done by working persons during the lunch hour, Monday to Friday.  Serve once a week, minimum.

Outings With Children : Volunteers are invited to join a one-on-one, year-round Saturday Outing Program that provides youngsters in foster-care institutions with cultural and recreational activities.  Once a month commitment, with initial orientation and follow-up workshop.  Annual membership fee.

Tutorial Program : Tutoring in basic skills such as reading and math with children and teenagers, assist in adult literacy programs, and offer English conversation to foreign-born students.  Various locations.  Expected volunteer commitment once or twice a week.

SERVING OCCASIONALLY...

Sorting clothes for the homelessClothing Distribution : Marble members and friends sort clothing that has been donated at the ACTION table.  Drivers with cars transport clothing to shelters and drop-in centers for the homeless of New York City.  Once a month at the church.

Food Collection : Volunteers collect donations of non-perishable food items from shoppers at a supermarket on 3rd Avenue and East 35th Street during stores hours.  Food is distributed to the homes of needy seniors in the area by HONEY (Help Our Neighbors Eat Year-round).

Holiday Season Events : Each year volunteers assist the church's many holiday ministries.  People donate, wrap and deliver gifts, or serve breakfast to the homeless on Christmas morning.  On Thanksgiving Day helpers serve turkey dinner to needy seniors and disabled persons through Project FIND.

Programs For Seniors : Volunteers help with luncheon programs for needy seniors: first Sunday of the month at the Sunday Lounge on East 31st Street, serve or cook.  Volunteer for monthly visits to nursing homes.

Recreation With The Disabled : Outings through Independent Recreation for the Disabled Inc., in which volunteers assist adults who are blind or in wheelchairs on outings such as picnics, shopping, visits to the zoo, and dinner at a restaurant.

Clean-up day in a NYC parkSoup Kitchens : Serve lunch to homeless guests weekdays at Holy Apostles on 9th Avenue at West 28th Street.

Special Olympics : Chaperones, coaches, guides, huggers help the physically challenged compete in sports events held several times a year.

Work Projects : Marble's Action Volunteers get together on a Saturday every few months to spruce things up.  Projects could include a Central Park clean up, or painting a shelter for homeless women and children.
