I've been thinking about writing a sermon entitled "Phrases To Throw Out (And A Handful To Keep)." But, my sermon titles and biblical texts for the rest of the year have already been submitted, and there was no room for that one. No problem. Since I view my blogs as mini-sermons anyway, I'll just preach it this way.

A friend of mine supports Smile Train. That’s an agency that goes into the most impoverished areas of the world and provides corrective surgery for children born with cleft palate or other disfiguring facial disorders. Over a million children on the planet have unrepaired cleft impairment.

Callings

In early June I preached Graduation Exercises for students receiving their diplomas from New York Theological Seminary. Even in spite of the preacher of the evening, it was an impressive ceremony. The students had worked long and hard and were deservedly proud. Their family members were there, smiling and celebrating.

Current Political Fears

As I write this, I have just seen the news that a second American journalist has been executed by ISIS in Iraq. Our prayers join with those of all good and reasonable people asking God to grant comfort and healing to the man’s family and to bring peace to that troubled area of the world.
