What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? - Luke 7:24

What an image this gives of what John is not. There is nothing shaky about this intense young man, cousin of Jesus, child born of longing and prayer, destined for Herod’s dungeon but anxious for his disciples to not be left forlorn. Honed by the desert winds, John is almost a creature of the wilderness itself. He is anything but a quivering reed. Jesus rightly calls him “more than a prophet.”

Let us walk today beside this extraordinary man whose brief ministry meant so much to Jesus.
