Lent: Thursday, March 16

For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do.
- Romans 7:19

This confession of Paul is classic, isn’t it? We have all made good resolutions, perhaps like those with which we began this Lent, and then vice rears its ugly head and we fail. It is no reason to give up. Rather it should be a spur to carry on since we obviously have work still to do.

Let us pray for the courage to keep the good in focus, even if we haven’t yet succeeded.

So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.
- Romans 10:17

Every disciple is a listener, anxious not to miss a vital word from the teacher. How we need to strive to listen better, not to allow the words to mingle with all those others that fill our days, but to treasure our prayer time where we might truly hear what he might say.

In quiet, may we truly hear his voice to us through his words that are ever new.

Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters… - Isaiah 55:1

We are all thirsty, are we not? We thirst for a more willing heart, for a deeper love, for a better understanding of our God. On this Sabbath day may we hold those desires front and center as we come to worship our Lord.

May we both hear the invitation and express our thirst in words.
