Lent: Thursday, March 23

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
- I Corinthians 1:18

There is the paradox of the cross for the first century world. It is the instrument of capital punishment visible everywhere along public roads, and it is the sign that we are loved beyond death to the Christian. It is hard for us to realize what courage it took for the first Christians to tell the story of the cross to those who would follow them into discipleship. They must have seemed as fools to many who turned away.

In our prayer let us ask ourselves what that cross means to us today.
