These people of Israel have such trouble trusting in the God who admonishes them in this verse to remember His past goodness to them and to set their course accordingly. Before we are too critical of them, we have to ask how like them we frequently are. In times of struggle it is easier to become engulfed in the present moment and to forget past goodness.
This is a day to renew our conviction that we never travel alone into the Lenten desert. Our God goes with us.
