"The Samurai’s Garden" Online Book Study
Sister Carol Perry and Rev. Elise Brown explore the main characters and themes of one of Sister Carol’s favorite novels. Whether you have read the book or not, you are welcome to join them on Zoom.
Author Gail Tsukiyama wrote The Samurai’s Garden in 1994 and it remains one of her finest novels. The book tells the story of a young Chinese student from Hong Kong who is sent to his family’s beach home on the coast of Japan to recover from tuberculosis. At first reluctant to be “sent away,” this young man builds a whole new life and community with many surprising bonds forged in the midst of struggle. As the story unfolds, we encounter themes of what healing looks like and how inclusion/exclusion function in many societies and cultures.
