Dear Me this Christmas,

The Christmas decorations in retail stores seem to go up earlier and earlier every year. I think I even saw some before Halloween this year. Soon it could be Back to School and Christmas sales at the same time. The message is buy, buy, buy! But what are the true gifts of Christmas? As I started thinking about this, the song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” came to mind. You know the one, “On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me a partridge in a pear tree.” It goes on to include turtle doves, french hens, calling birds as well as maids a-milking and lords a-leaping. I chuckled to myself as I thought I’m lactose intolerant and I don't know where ten lords would leap in my Manhattan apartment.

The writer of that song would definitely not be a candidate for true love for me. So who is my true love and what gifts would I desire? Of course, I thought of Jesus as He is the reason for the season. I thought of my family and friends. And finally, I thought of myself. Do I love myself kindly and generously? If I don’t do that, can I truly love others kindly and generously?

In this season where I feel like I’m playing whack a mole with a never ending to do list, being kind or generous to myself is last on that list. So this Advent season, I’m trying something new. I am my true love and each day I’m going to give myself a gift.  I’m going to write a post it each morning that reminds me that the day itself is a gift and one way that I will enjoy and savor this gift. One thing immediately comes to mind. I love to sing and dance to a favorite song. It takes less than four minutes and I can't remember the last time I took the time to do it. I’ve attached two of my go to songs and hope you enjoy them as much as  I do.

Yours Sincerely,

Patricia
